Havet og væk (The Sea and Away) is a novel composed of ten initially-seeming standalone short stories (including “The Sea” and “Away”) that gradually weave in and out of each other and the different stages of the characters’ lives. Stories of having to grow up too soon, difficult motherhood, parent child relationships and clinging onto the past. We meet a neglected child living in a commune with her mother and a group of naturist adults, a sick mother whose daughter wants to kill her little sister, and some troubled teenagers who live parent-free in a fishing hut and refuse to go to school. At the centre of it all: a tragic suicide that ricochets through generations.
